| why | This site was put together to provide historical documentation concerning a period of time in history which meant a lot to those of us who took part in this era, the underground BBS scene of Sweden. |

| our story |
The BBS scene had already grown big in Sweden in the early 90's, but there was only a handful BBS systems around that were useful at the
time. Most of them, if not even commercial, demanded a piece of engineering art to be configured properly. They took an infinite amount of
time to set up, or were just a plain useless. At the same time the underground software piracy scene urged for features not found in the
present BBS systems. Hence custom modifications and even entirely new BBS systems started to pop up in lieu of "main-stream" systems such
as Remote Access and PCBoard, which were the two largest commercial alternatives at the time. PCBoard quickly became quite a success due to
it's built-in scripting language, PPL, which made customization easy and it's robustness. However, PCBoard was a corporate BBS system made
for businesses and not the piracy community.
Sometime around 1995, a group of friends in Lund, Sweden, was setting up a BBS system of their own, The Northside Project. The sysops of Northside Projects did what was the time a bold move and decided to use a homebrewn BBS software called Instinct, which was being developed by Spider. Instinct was at this time at its version 1 and lacked quite a bit in functionality. Not only did it not have a filemanager, there wasnt even a usermanager. Spider had by then given the sourcecode to Wiper, who had continued to work where Spider left off. But not only Spider had trouble allocating the time a project of this size demanded, so did Wiper who after one release stopped working on it. Northside Project were at the time in full operation running on the Wiper version, but more work was desperately needed. Since noone else seemed to be doing it, the Northside crew decided to go ahead with it themselves. After a few weeks of efforts to contact both Spider and Wiper, the sources of the 1.2 version was finally sent to Leviathan of Northside by Spider, and an era of our lives took off from the runway. Things would never be the same again. Leviathan immediately started hacking on the sourcecode in order to bring our version to where Wiper left off with his 1.3 release. Leviathan's and Steriods rooms quickly became our normal habitat as countless hours of discussing new features, codehacking, ansidrawing and relaxing filled our spare time. In the years to come, we transformed Instinct from being a promising hack to a full fledged BBS Software suite with all the necessary tools and support: Instinct 3. |
